Catriona Barras, of O’ Kanes Off-licences in Rosemount, told us about the difficulties they are presented with when they refuse to sell alcohol to those that are underage: Q – What kind of difficulties do you face when you refuse to sell alcohol to underage drinkers? A – At times they can become verbally abusive, very destructive to our premises and on occasions some of our staff have even experienced damage to their own personal property i.e. their cars because they refused to sell alcohol to someone they deemed underage. Q – Who do you think is to blame for the growing numbers of underage drinkers in our community? A – I think there are a lot of people to blame, for example, parents for giving their children too much money which enables them to buy their alcohol, children are also given too much freedom these days to hang around street corners until very late at night and nothing is being done to prevent their anti-social behaviour. Parents should be made aware by the local media that there are adults out there who are willing to buy children alcohol for a fee and certain off-licences that are only to happy to take the sale!
- Are you aware that your children are gathering together in places like this at the weekends to drink…?! - Do you want to know or is it someone else’s problem? - Please take more of an interest as to where your children are to ensure their safety and secure their future! |
